Issuing a 200-som bond with his portrait is not the only recognition of the outstanding poet and interpreter. Alykul Osmonov was also a great dramatist, who has raised the level of artistic and aesthetic perception of the Kyrgyz poetry.
A lot of literary societies, schools, town and village streets were named after him. In 1986 the Literary Prize named in honor of Alykul Osmonov was instituted by the Writer’s Union of Kyrgyzstan. One of the Kyrgyz peaks (4060 meters) has the poet’s name.
“The Kyrgyz Esenin”
Becoming an orphan in the early age, Alykul was brought up in the Pishpek and later in Tokmok orphanages. He studied at the pedagogical technical school, where he perfectly mastered in Russian language. Thanks to this knowledge his translations of the Pushkin’s novel “Eugenuy Onegin,” Shakespeare’s “Othello” and “Twelfth Night,” many medieval novels, fairy tails “Little Red Riding Hood” and “Puss in Boots,” famous novel “Knight in Tiger’s Fell” and other were widely acknowledged.
The collection of his own poems and children works is filled with love to life and motherland.
Already at that time Osmonov suffered from severe lungs disease. His collection in Russian has been published many times. In its turn it was translated into other languages from Russian. Walter May, who has translated the Sagymbay’s version of epos “Manas,” translated Osmonov’s collection of poems into English. In 1995 the “Soros-Kyrgyzstan” Foundation realized the translation of the poems’ collection “Waves of the Lake” into English and Kyrgyz commemorating poet’s 80th anniversary. In 2002 certain poems by Alykul were included into the collection “Poets of the World” in Japanese language. Recently in Hungary a collection of children and selected works of akyn Osmonov, who advanced in such a short life to praise the native Kyrgyzstan in his works, was published.
-I have not understood at once, why this dual feeling occurs when making acquainted with Osmonov’s heritage. However, later I have realized, “Certainly, the warm feeling is coming from Alykul’s poems and the depth of his humaneness; the anxious trouble – from the bitter destiny of the poet, which has finished with the abruptly ended life,” one of the poet’s interpreters, Nikolay Pustynnikov, shares his impression. His style was so perfect and melodious that Alykul was called “the Kyrgyz Esenin.” The composers, Moldobasanov and Moldybaev set his poems to music. Opera “Othello” in his translation was staged in the opera house. According to the national Kyrgyz writer, Tugelbay Sydykbekov, Osmonov’s works remain fresh, topical as if they have been written today. They are fated to always remain young, just as to their author.
“I am eternal. A Thousand times I will come back…”
In Toktogul museum of Bishkek the exposition has been opened, dedicated to the poet’s creation, his poems “suffused with transparent spring water, with the smell of the early morning sun and ripe fruits from the garden on the daybreak,” as the national poet Kaisyn Kuliev wrote.
The goal of the exposition is to show, how on the basis of Russian literature and Cyrillic, the Kyrgyz literature was being created, and also to compare the English translations of the lyric masterpieces by the poet, who created the revolution in Kyrgyz poetry and made it truly professional.
Modest, fit and intelligent poet, journalist of the “Leninchil Jash” newspaper, member of the literary society “Iskra,” editor of the “Chabuul” magazine, Alykul Osmonov looks at the visitors out of his portrait, written by Gapar Aitiev in 1940.
“I am eternal. A Thousand Times I will come back…,” he wrote and now he came back to us again in his literary masterpieces, which apotheosize the lake Issyk-Kul, Issyk-Ata and Koisary ravines and many other places of the beloved region.
After Osmonov’s death from the lungs’ decease in 1950, the poet N.Baitemirov wrote,

By the way
On the 75th kilometer from Bishkek in the Talas direction there is a holy place, which gave Osmonov’s world Kaptal-Aryk. On the initiative of fellow villagers and admirers of the poet’s talent in 1990 commemorating the 75th anniversary of the poet, one of the most beautiful cultural and architectural complexes not only of Panfilov region, but of Kyrgyzstan as a whole – Osmonov Museum, was built. Its total area is 149, 5 square meters. There are more than 1000 exhibits in it, dedicated to the poet’s life and creation, which have played a great role in breeding love to the motherland, literature and spiritual culture of the Kyrgyz youth.
On the museum’s territory 500 silver poplars are planted and 35 birches around the poet’s bust.
Newlyweds, “young talents” and conscripts come here to salute to the poet. Unfortunately, this place is not yet widely known by the tourists.
In August 1999 in the Ministry of Justice of the Kyrgyz Republic the Fund of A. Osmonov’s poetry was registered. However, nowadays collections of the great poems, published in a short run, are not being reprinted. |
